Training Description

Two-day online training: DBR for shock and attachment wounding

This two-day training is the second part of the CPR training. It offers participants a more comprehensive understanding of the role of midbrain-based systems in attachment pain and attachment shock, as well as in their healing.

We further explore brainstem responses to relational or interactional stimuli that underpin attachment patterns and consider how they can activate basic affective and defensive responses and ultimately modify the search for connection.

Adversity and trauma in early life compromise the functional integrity and fluidity of these brainstem-based networks, thereby establishing a developmental trajectory that shapes attachment capacities across the lifespan.

This is reflected in the relational disturbances commonly encountered in therapeutic work with traumatised clients.

Such relational disturbances are often rooted in conflicting patterns of orientation and response linked to attachment seeking. Relational conflicts and affective responses may then emerge that are explained more by past events than by present circumstances.

Working with conflicting relational orientation patterns derived from previous experiences of grief and attachment shock offers access to the associated physiological residues using the O-T-A-S sequences mapped in Deep Brain Reorientation.

This promotes the release of the brain’s healing mechanism so that blocked processing can be released and, optimally, enable resolution of past attachment adversity.

Agenda

The timetables show the order of teaching and learning:

1.) The participants will have theoretical expositions of the DBR intervention.

2) The location and functions of the neuro-anatomy underpinning the intervention will be taught.

3.) Precise practice instructions will be given and questions will be answered.

4) Two live demonstrations will be given with group participants being assisted by Frank Corrigan.

5) All participants will be able to practice the intervention in a group of three therapists in Zoom practice rooms.

6) There will be question and answer sessions.

7) There will be breaks and lunch breaks.

Learning goals:

Main learning objectives:

  • To deepen knowledge of the neurobiology underpinning human attachment and connection.
  • To understand the critical role played by a triad of midbrain neural circuits in the formation of conflicting orientation patterns across the lifespan.
  • Refine our thinking about the dual implications of attachment pain and attachment shock on the innate connection system and the innate alarm system.
