Training Description

This live online training offers a clear, clinically usable pathway to understand and treat Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and challenging narcissistic presentations through the lens of Schema Therapy, with a special focus on Wendy Behary’s signature clinical tool: Empathic Confrontation. Through case-based learning, micro-interventions, and therapist-position work, participants will learn how to build a strong alliance without collapsing boundaries, reduce power struggles, and access the vulnerability and toxic shame that often sit underneath grandiosity, control, and lack of reciprocity.

Learning goals:

Learning objectives (by block)

Empathic Confrontation (Class 1):

  • Identify and conceptualize challenging and uncompromising modes.
  • Build a navigational treatment map.
  • Apply Empathic Confrontation strategies to strengthen the therapeutic relationship and modify resistance, avoidance, and overcompensation.
  • Integrate experiential strategies targeting core unmet needs (toxic shame, mistrust, injustice, unconditional acceptance).

Narcissism (Classes 2 and 3):

  • Conceptualize narcissism and NPD to guide treatment strategy.
  • Use Empathic Confrontation to maintain leverage, avoid power struggles, address entitlement, and set limits.
  • Replace self-defeating patterns and coping modes with healthy modes through moment-to-moment therapeutic encounters.
  • Develop a sturdy self by identifying and stabilizing the therapist’s own schemas as obstacles to effectiveness.
  • Create customized dialogues that increase access to vulnerability and emotion.

Couples (Classes 4 and 5):

  • Assess each partner’s schemas and coping modes.
  • Track attachment ruptures and activating conditions in cycles of conflict.
  • Address dysfunctional mode cycles using emotion-focused and CBT strategies, and the therapy relationship, to heal schemas and meet frustrated core needs.
  • Restore trust and intimacy and strengthen healthy coping using Empathic Confrontation.
  • Sustain a sturdy self in high-conflict moments.

Who is Wendy T. Behary? Wendy T. Behary, LCSW, is a clinician and trainer internationally recognized for her work with narcissism and NPD. She is the founder and clinical director of The Cognitive Therapy Center of New Jersey and co-director of The Schema Therapy Institutes of NJ-NYC-DC. She is the author of Disarming the Narcissist: Surviving and Thriving with the Self-Absorbed (New Harbinger Publications, 3rd ed., 2021), a widely used reference for clinicians and the general public.

To participate in the training, you will need a PC or Mac, tablet, or mobile phone with internet access. You will also need some paper and a pen to take notes.
