All content is pre-recorded \nPlace\nOnline training\, hosted on our Virtual Campus \nAccess time\nStudents will have access to the material for one month\, counting from the time of purchase. \nLanguage\nBilingual training\, available in English and Spanish. \n \nTraining Description\nRuth Lanius and Bethany Brand\, internationally renowned trauma experts\, will present recent research findings on how to provide integrative treatment for severely traumatised and dissociative clients. \nThe presentations are through clinical case examples\, fascinating studies and engaging role-plays. \nMethods for stabilising even high-risk suicidal and dissociative clients will be taught. \nThe programme\, called Finding Solid Ground\, guides clinicians to help traumatised people gradually develop the willingness and ability to engage with their emotions\, bodies and fragmented states of self so that they can safely connect with others. \nIt will explain how findings from neuroscience and treatment studies can be applied to individual clients to help them become fully present\, emotionally alive and feel a sense of belonging in the world. \nFew clinicians have received training in treatment approaches for traumatised clients experiencing complex dissociative symptoms\, even though these clients have extremely high rates of self-harm\, hospitalisations and suicide attempts. \nBethany Brand\, Hygge Schielke and Ruth Lanius developed the Finding Solid Ground Programme\, a therapeutic intervention that has shown promise in stabilising clients with complex dissociative symptoms. \nPromising findings from international treatment studies\, such as Treatment of Patients with Dissociative Disorders (TOP DD)\, which evaluated the Finding Solid Ground programme\, will be discussed. \nThese prospective studies show that trauma-informed phasic treatment is associated with a decrease in PTSD and dissociation symptoms\, self-harm\, suicide attempts\, hospitalisations and treatment costs. \nThe speakers will discuss the findings of the recent TOP DD Network study\, which is a web-based programme for patients with dissociative disorders (DD) and their therapists\, and is currently being evaluated in a randomised controlled trial. \nAgenda\nDay one:\nFundamentals of treatment of complex dissociative patients: Treatment approaches based on research and neurobiology. \n\nWe will provide an overview of complex trauma research and the impact of trauma on the brain. We will review expert recommendations for interventions that are crucial in the early treatment of present-centred trauma.\nWe will describe how and why we developed the TOP DD studies\, as well as the Finding Solid Ground programme. The Finding Solid Ground programme is a consumer\, therapist and research-based programme for trauma survivors who are overwhelmed by dissociation\, PTSD and unsafe impulses and behaviours. Interventions and programming are guided by an understanding of the neurobiological impact of trauma. We will discuss findings on the most common triggers for insecure behaviour and how the Finding Solid Ground programme addresses these triggers.\nThe development of the Finding Solid Ground programme has been based on over a decade of research and input from clinicians and people living with dissociative reactions. We will review the TOP DD studies and their findings\, and then describe the format and structure of the current state-of-the-art TOP DD randomised controlled trial that is underway.\nRole-plays – Leaders will engage in role-plays of dissociative individuals who struggle with dissociation\, safety and dissociation\, but do not want to ‘give up’ self-harm and dissociation.Early Interventions in the Finding Solid Ground Programme: How to intervene with highly dissociative clients who slip into the traumatic past.\n\n  \nEarly Interventions in the Finding Solid Ground Program: How to Intervene with Highly Dissociative Clients Who Slip Into the Traumatic Past \n\nGrounding – We will present the 3 core modules of grounding. To make progress in sessions and in their daily lives\, clients need to be present and not feel too much or too little. Grounding helps with both. We present a very detailed guide on grounding and working with clients who are reluctant to ground themselves.\nSeparating the past from the present – We present the 3 themes in this module. Even though a person is grounded\, they may have the feeling that the past is coming back to haunt them. Clients may not be able to stay grounded and safe if they are frequently inundated by traumatic intrusions and too much or too little emotion. Therefore\, grounding is necessary\, as well as emotion regulation\, as a basis for feeling safe.\nFoundations: There are 5 foundations necessary to move towards safety. We will discuss how to help clients manage excessive feelings\, including crisis level feelings that create a sense of urgency in clients. We will present an overview of the impact of trauma on the brain and an overview of how the programme helps to heal the impact of trauma on the brain. We will discuss ways to help traumatised clients develop self-compassion\, including helping them to recognise and manage trauma-based thinking.\nRole play – grounding and safety in role play.\n\n\nDay two:\nFinding firm ground in the present with self-compassion \n\nGetting and Feeling Safer – Part 1: We will discuss how to guide clients in identifying and managing triggers. We will present the Cycle of Unhealthy Behavior and how to use it with clients to improve their understanding of what leads to unhealthy behavior and how to interrupt this cycle. We will discuss helping clients recognize and plan how to manage challenging situations without engaging in high risk or unhealthy behaviors\, and without dissociating.\nHealthy needs: We will discuss how to help clients understand that everyone has healthy needs. Many types of unsafe behaviors are actually attempts to get needs met. We will explain how to help clients understand their healthy needs and ways to get them met safely.\nContinued Work on Identifying and Reducing Trauma-driven Beliefs. Many of these beliefs create roadblocks to making progress in healing and are not fair or accurate. We discuss a method for helping clients identify and work on shifting from trauma- driven to recovery-focused thinking.\nGetting and Feeling Safer – Part 2: We will discuss the 3 topics in this module including working to calm the alarm system and the Window of Tolerance. Traumatized clients tend to feel too much or too little\, which we explain in this section\, along with how to notice when clients are outside their Window and how to widen their Window of Tolerance. Feeling Too Much or Too Little and Your Window of Tolerance\nRole plays based on these topics.\n\n  \nLearning to Be in Your Body After Trauma \n\nImproving the relationship to emotions\, bodily sensations and aspects of the self: This is a critically important module with six topics related to why feelings are important and yet very difficult for trauma survivors. We present a method for slowly guiding clients to learn to identify\, experience and name their emotions and related feelings.\nAccepting Feelings and Parts: We address what it does and does not mean to accept dissociative feelings and parts and how to develop healthy relationships with dissociative emotions and parts.\nDealing with Toxic Shame – We discuss how shame is a tremendously important emotion in traumatized individuals and how to gradually work on healing toxic shame.\nLearning to allow good feelings and positive experiences: We explain why it is often difficult for trauma survivors to allow themselves to feel good and methods for developing the capacity to tolerate\, and gradually enjoy\, feeling good.Role plays based on these themes.\n\nFormat\n\n Pre-recorded training\n \n\n This deferred training allows participants to view the content on the days and times that are most convenient for them. \n\n Training in English\n \n\n All the content is available in English \n\n Certificate of completion\n \n\n Upon completion of the training\, participants will receive a certificate of completion \n \n \nTrainers\n\nRuth Lanius\nLeading figure in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) research. \nView more information about Ruth Lanius \n\nBethany Brand\nAuthor\, professor at Towson University\, expert on trauma and dissociation \nView more information about Bethany Brand \nCancellation policy:\nWrite to us in case you need to report a technical issue or need. Clinicians around the world are now trained in different trauma treatment techniques\, such as EMDR\, CBT\, DBT\, sensorimotor psychotherapy\, neurofeedback\, internal family systems\, and ego state therapy. \nThis seminar with Dr. Lanius is intended to provide ways on how to integrate all of these approaches into trauma-informed treatment. \nThrough this excellent training\, Dr. Ruth Lanius masterfully imparts to clinicians how to bring together some of her preferred therapeutic models in the service of meeting the needs of her clients in therapy. \nDr. Ruth Lanius’ Key Integrative Therapeutic Interventions address the restoration of Self and resolve Trauma-based symptoms and barriers to treatments. \nSome of these barriers and symptoms are disembodiment\, which is a disruption of people’s body awareness\, emotional detachment\, self-injury and self-mutilation\, shame\, intolerance to positive emotions and related lack of self-compassion\, self-fragmentations\, muscle freezing/tonic immobility. \nThe methodology used is composed of presentations and theoretical presentations recorded and available through the Virtual Learning Platform\, as well as presentations of real cases\, role-plays and interactive questions and answers. \nIn addition\, treatment approaches focused on restoring interpersonal functioning and preventing intergenerational transmission of trauma will be reviewed. Finally\, effective means of preventing vicarious traumatization in therapists will be identified. \n  \nModule Training Overview\nModule 1\n How to Manage Hyperarousal and Intense Negative Affect: Expanding the Window of Tolerance \nTraumatized clients sometimes face extreme hyperarousal and associated emotions\, including fear\, anger\, guilt and shame. How do we help clients to become aware of these intense feeling states before they become overwhelming? What strategies can we teach our clients to maintain a feeling of control when they are overwhelmed by intense negative emotions? How can we help clients to avoid self-punishment following intense emotional experiences? This section of the workshop will address these questions using specific case examples. Neurobiological aspects of hyperarousal and intense emotional experiences will also be described. \nAfter this module\, participants will be able to: \n\nDiscuss the implications of the Window of Tolerance\nConstruct teaching materials for clients about the window of tolerance\nAppraise strategies to build clients’ self-awareness about where they are at on the window of tolerance\nOutline 3 verbal\, 3 somatic and 2 art-therapy strategies\n\nmaintain a sense of control. \n\nIdentify core emotions in clients: Fear\, Anger\, Guilt\, Shame.\nTeach clients and therapists how trauma shapes the brain.\n\nModule 2\n “At War with the Body: Overcoming Emotional Detachment and Self-Mutilation” \nMany traumatized clients have become alienated from their own bodies. Feelings experienced during the trauma were often futile and led clients to become detached from their feelings to the point where they experience profound emotional numbing\, detachment\, and have a decreased ability to be aware of the feelings of others. In addition\, clients are often disgusted and ashamed of their bodies and emotions and resort to self-mutilation. This section of the workshop will describe and illustrate how to assist a client with reconnecting to their feelings using trauma-informed body scans. Moreover\, identifying different causes of self-mutilation and how to address them therapeutically will be discussed and illustrated through role-plays. Neurobiological aspects of embodiment will also be described. Finally\, neurofeedback will be discussed as a potential adjunctive treatment for complex emotion dysregulation issues. \nAfter this module participants will be able to: \n\nArrange expositions that teach clients about the reasons why they have disconnected from their bodies\nDiscuss how the body holds the impact of intense emotions\nDiscuss strategies to overcome self-harm and self-mutilation\nPractice teachable skills to help clients re-inhabit their body in the aftermath of Trauma.\nDiscuss brain patterns that underlie emotional detachment.\n\nModule 3\nOvercoming Positive Emotion Intolerance and Building Capacity for Self-Compassion \n Traumatized clients are often flooded with negative emotions after experiencing positive feelings. Moreover\, shame can frequently be associated with the feeling of being non-deserving of experiencing positive emotions\, including pride\, passion\, and love. How can we teach clients to overcome intense experiences of shame? How can we teach traumatized clients to be more self-compassionate and thus increase their capacity for positive affect tolerance? This section of the workshop will address specific strategies of dealing with shame and related self-dysfunction\, including self-loathing. Moreover\, specific interventions that can help to increase self-compassion will be illustrated through case examples. Neurobiological aspects of positive emotion intolerance will also be described. \nAfter this module participants will be able to: \n\nDiscuss why is so hard for traumatized individuals to experience positive feelings\nPoint to ways for clients to become more comfortable with positive feelings\nIdentify strategies to recruit Self-Compassion in the aftermath of Trauma\nPropose Skills for Self-Compassion\nExpress how shame can decrease feelings of Self-Compassion and Love\nPrescribe ways how to reverse the toxicity of Shame\n\nModule 4\n Challenging Moments in Trauma Treatment: Self Fragmentation \nChallenges around working with ego states will be discussed using clinical case examples. A particular focus on how to approach inner critics/perpetrator introjects early in therapy will be discussed; this will be followed by a role play illustrating barriers that can arise when working with perpetrator introjects. \nAfter this module participants will be able to: \n\nExplain the assessment of Self-Fragmentation\nConduct mapping of internal States\nOrganize resourcing to Internal States\nFormulate treatment internalized perpetrators\, inner critics\, and child parts\nPlan Treatment Goals towards re-stablishing wholeness.\nPrepare for Assessment and Treatment of the Internal Barriers between dissociated parts\n\nModule 5\nHow to Integrate Neurofeedback into Complex Trauma Treatment \n The last module will discuss how clinicians can integrate neurofeedback in the treatment of complex trauma. This will be illustrated through case examples. The current evidence for neurofeedback for trauma-related disorders will also be described. Finally\, the audience will be invited to reflect on their experiences over the last five modules\, which will include a discussion of how to avoid and mitigate the effects of vicarious traumatization. \nAfter this module participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe what is Neurofeedback\nOutline 3 ways the brain will change in response to neurofeedback\nDiscuss Neurofeedback integration with other modalities such as: DBT\, IFS\, Sensory-Motor\, EMDR\, CBT\, Deep Brain Reorienting\, Ego State Therapy\, Mindfulness and Psychedelics\nEvaluate what is an integrated approach to Trauma Treatment\nSummarize the entire 5 modules learning into a cohesive treatment strategy\nPrescribe strategies to make neuro-feedback available for trauma therapists.\n\n  \nGeneral Learning goals:\nAfter this training participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe Complex Trauma\nClassify Trauma Symptoms\nEvaluate Trauma barriers to Treatment\nRate Treatment modalities that match Clients need with the Therapists skills\nOrganize a successful integration of different Trauma processing techniques\nFormulate Integrative Treatment protocols\nTrace Brain Neuroplasticity before and after Treatment\nEstimate potential Neurofeedback Trauma Informed Interventions\n\n \nAgenda\nSCHEDULE OF LIVE ONLINE SESSIONS WITH  RUTH LANIUS MD\, Ph.D.: \nAll question and answer sessions are scheduled on THURSDAY. \nSession duration: 60 minutes each session. \nDATES for Q&A sessions of 1 hr. duration each. \nModule one: September 30 \nModule 2: October 7 \nModule three: October 14 \nModule 4: October 21 \nModule 5: October 28 \nThe schedule will always be the same\, see here for the time in your location. \nSchedule of the Live Sessions with Dr. Ruth Lanius in different locations: \nBarcelona\, Spain 20:00 CEST \nLondon\, United Kingdom 19:00 BST \nLondon\, Canada 14:00 EDT \nLos Angeles\, USA 11:00 PDT \nDenver\, USA 12:00 MDT \nBuenos Aires\, Argentina 15:00 ART \nSantiago\, Chile 15:00 CLST \nLima\, Peru 13:00 PET \nMexico City\, Mexico 13:00 CDT \nRome\, Italy 20:00 CEST \nAccompanying reading:\nWe recommend that this course be accompanied by the study and reading of the following books: \n \n \nImpact of Early Life Trauma on Health and Disease\nThe Hidden Epidemic\nRuth A.
