Description of the intensive workshop

Working with trauma and attachment wounds requires not just learning the theory or techniques, but also building capacity within our Selves to “be with” and really “stay with” deep emotional pain, grief, shame, rage, unbearable states of aloneness.
It requires a strong therapeutic presence; leading boldy; co-regulating; psycho-biologically attuning to our patients, our self, the relationship, and the “space between us.” It requires actively advocating and championing our patients’ capacity to heal and be whole when they see and feel nothing but despair and darkness.
In short, it requires “Fierce Love”, a clinical approach developed by SueAnne Piliero, Ph.D.

In this three-day workshop, we will explore in-depth what therapeutic presence really means, and how to bring our SELFS more fully into the therapeutic relationship—and what stands in the way—in order to enhance, deepen, and accelerate the healing process.

Theoretical framework

This workshop is based on AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), which champions our innate healing capacities. AEDP has roots in and resonances with many disciplines — among them interpersonal neurobiology, attachment theory, emotion theory and affective neuroscience, body-focused approaches, and last but not least, transformational studies. AEDP uses specific intervention strategies for working explicitly, dyadically, and experientially with intense unresolved traumatic emotions. These transform suffering and foster patients’ feeling deeply recognized and understood, safe and secure, and as a result, increasingly capable to reconnect to their Core Self.

Learning goals:

By attending this seminar, you will learn how to:

  • Strengthen your ability to be more wholly present, engaged, and psycho-biologically attuned to your patients
  • Enhance your ability to use your Self as the healing mechanism (e.g. through self disclosure of feelings, patient’s impact on you, etc.)
  • Accelerate, enhance and complete the healing process by “leading” more and advocating more fiercely on behalf of your patient’s disavowed trauma parts
  • Work with “Child/Trauma Parts” to heal the intrapsychic wounds and Reclaim the Core Self
  • Formulate and utilize guided-imagery interventions (i.e. “portrayals”) in transforming trauma
  • Sharpen your moment-to-moment tracking skills focusing on words, affect, meaning making, and the body
  • Transform shame, pathogenic affects, core erroneous beliefs about the self and other through structural rebuilding and uncoupling techniques
  • Recognize your own “affect phobias” that get in the way of your patient’s healing journey
  • Demonstrate how to be more affectively engaged, psychobiologically attuned, relationally courageous—i.e. how to apply Fierce Love in your work with patients
  • Summarize what therapeutic presence really means—being inside the patient’s world and our patients knowing it, feeling it, and viscerally registering it—and the integral part it plays in transforming the Self.
  • Utilize and champion the Core Self to work with the Adult Self to heal the Wounded Self (the amalgam of child/trauma parts)
  • Demonstrate what we really mean by “undoing aloneness”, e.g. how to really “be there” “bear witness” and “be with” our patients in these unbearable states of pain, terror, and utter aloneness in order to transform these trauma states
  • Explain and show how to reliably use your Self as the corrective emotional experience for your patients (e.g. through judicious self disclosure of feelings and patient’s impact on you, etc.)
  • Demonstrate and promote and enhance Memory Reconsolidation
  • Apply micro-attunement and moment-to-moment tracking skills, fundamental ingredients in helping clients heal
  • Discover the central place of pathogenic affects (e.g. feelings of worthlessness, toxic shame) in trauma
  • Develop clinical skills for working with “child/trauma parts” to facilitate self-to-self healing
  • Demonstrate how to pendulate, co-regulate and provide dyadic affect regulation, essential clinical ingredients in working with trauma
  • Discover how to transform core erroneous beliefs about Self and Other through structural rebuilding of the Self and uncoupling dynamics
  • Discover the ways in which your own “affect phobias” and discomfort with emotional closeness and self regard may be impacting your clinical work.
  • Use your own emotional pain, your own resonant experiences, to deepen and enhance the healing process.
